Most Australian small businesses spend more on Google Ads than they need to. Campaigns run for months without a clear strategy, bleeding budget on searches that will never turn into a customer.
A Google Ads specialist isn't someone who clicks buttons in an ad account. Their job is to lower what it costs you to win a new customer, and keep lowering it. That's the whole game. This guide walks through what that looks like day to day, why it matters, and, near the end, a five-point checklist you can run on your own account before you hire anyone.
We're Soaringwebs, a small Brisbane studio serving Australian small and medium businesses. Parts of this reflect how we approach the work, but the checklist works whether you hire us, hire someone else, or keep managing it yourself.
The job is to lower your cost per customer
Everything a specialist does traces back to one number: customer acquisition cost, how much you can afford to pay for a new customer and still make money. A campaign that generates a hundred clicks but no calls is expensive. A campaign that generates three qualified phone calls from Ipswich tradies looking for exactly what you sell is cheap, even at a higher cost per click.
Vanity metrics don't pay wages. Conversions do, the phone call, the booking form, the walk-in to the Paddington shopfront. A good specialist is fluent in keyword research, ad copy, landing pages and conversion tracking, and ties every one of them back to that one number.
Even paid search is affected by overall site quality. Google's people-first content guidance and SEO Starter Guide apply to your landing pages, not just your blog. This isn't algorithm-chasing, a page that genuinely helps someone decide is a page that converts, and Google rewards it with a lower cost per click.
Why do you need a Google Ads specialist?

Running Ads well isn't clever, it's consistent, data-driven optimisation. Most tradies, allied health clinics and accountants we talk to around Brisbane are already stretched thin. They don't have time to become experts in a platform that changes every quarter.
Learning as you go is expensive. Targeting the wrong keywords, writing weak copy, sending traffic to a slow homepage, those errors compound into a cost per lead well above what it should be. A specialist takes that off your plate, but you still have to be involved in defining who your best customer is and what makes your business worth choosing. Nobody outside your business can invent that.
What does a Google Ads specialist actually do day to day?
Every task below either raises the quality of the click or lowers what you pay for it:
- Strategy and goal setting. Deciding what a lead is worth, which services to promote, and what cost per lead the campaign has to hit to be profitable.
- Keyword research. Finding the terms your customers actually type, not the ones you assume, and separating high-intent buyers from browsers.
- Negative keyword research. Often the biggest lever. A Springwood plumber excluding "DIY plumbing", "plumbing courses" and "plumbing jobs" stops paying for clicks that could never have converted.
- Ad copy and creative. Writing headlines that attract the right click, not just any click. A more specific ad costs less per click and converts more of them.
- Landing pages and conversion tracking. Making sure the page the ad points to matches the search, and that every call, form and purchase is measured accurately.
- Bidding, budget and structure. Choosing campaign types, match types and bid strategies that fit the goal, and adjusting as data comes in.
- Ongoing monitoring and reporting. Cutting what's not working, doubling down on what is, and explaining it in plain English.
Done together, those move the cost-per-customer number. One Soaringwebs client went from 3.5 to 4.8 stars on Google and grew their reviews by over 700% (3 → 25 Google reviews) through a combined SEO and Ads programme, the Ads sent the traffic, but the landing page and review-request flow turned a bigger share of that traffic into paying customers.
How your website fits in

Ads and website are the same funnel. Sending paid traffic to a slow, confusing page is the fastest way to burn budget, and the fastest way to push your cost per lead the wrong direction.
Accurate conversion tracking, landing pages built for the specific search, and remarketing to re-engage warm visitors have to sit together. Plenty of sites we look at have no clear call to action or confusing navigation, simple fixes that lift conversion from paid traffic.
Google's guidance on relevance, distance and prominence is a useful reference for how local visibility works alongside your paid campaigns, especially if you serve a defined area like the inner north or the western suburbs.
Should you do Ads or SEO first?
Both, in the right order. SEO builds long-term organic traffic. Ads give you immediate visibility while that builds. They complement each other: a strong content foundation improves your Quality Score and lowers cost per click, and Ads data tells you which keywords are worth optimising for organically.
If you can only start with one, ask the sharper question: "Do we need customers this month?", start with Ads. "Do we need to stop paying for every customer forever?", start with SEO. Then layer.
How much does a Google Ads specialist cost?
Pricing depends on scope, industry and how competitive your market is. Our Google Ads management sits inside broader monthly plans with no lock-in contract:
- Solo, A$149/month
- Studio, A$1,290/month
- Scale, A$2,490/month
- Enterprise, from A$4,500/month for heavier requirements
Ad spend is paid directly to Google and is separate from management. It's variable, seasonal shifts and competition move it around, and a specialist should be adjusting strategy as those numbers change, not setting and forgetting.
What to check before you hire anyone
Before you talk to any specialist, us or otherwise, take half an hour and open your existing Google Ads account. Look past the clicks and impressions:
- What's the actual cost per lead? Not per click, per genuine enquiry.
- Are those leads qualified? Or are they existing customers, job seekers and wrong numbers?
- Is conversion tracking set up? And does it match what's landing in your CRM or inbox? A mismatch means part of the reporting you're seeing is fiction.
- Are there negative keywords in place? Or is the account paying for "free", "DIY", "jobs", "courses" and competitor brand names?
- Does each ad point to a page written for that specific search? Or a generic homepage?
If you can't answer three of the five, that's your diagnosis, not a reason to spend more, a reason to fix the plumbing first.
Don't be afraid to pause underperforming keywords or ads. A lot of accounts leave them running for months because "we already paid for the setup time". Cutting losses is how you protect return on ad spend, which is another way of saying: how you keep your cost per customer honest.
